Follow me in the Te Araroa adventure

Te Araroa is the ultimate New Zealand adventure: A 1864-mile tramping trail stretching the entire length of the country from the northern tip of the North Island to the South Island’s southernmost coast.
Parcours Te Araroa

Te Araroa, also called The Long Pathway, is a long-distance walking track stretching the entire length of the country from Cape Reinga, at the northern tip of the North Island, to Bluff, on the South Island’s southernmost coast.

Officially opened in December 2011 by the Te Araroa Trust and maintained by the joint effort of volunteers, this 1864-mile thru-hike is perfect to experience New Zealand’s wide range of landscapes, ranging from volcanos, mountains and rivers to lakes and forests.

I then decided embark on this adventure from November 2016 for a thru-hike that should last around 5 months according to my assessment. My goal is simple: Walk through the whole country without using any motorized means of transportation in order to get to know myself better, meet Kiwis and discover their culture at human speed and in an environmentally friendly way.

I am going on an adventure

Wednesday, November 09, 2016, I am finally there, at Cape Reinga. After 4 days spent in Auckland to bring my preparation to an end, I meet with Mélanie, Élodie and Adrien, three excellent friends of mine travelling around Australia and currently spending a month in...

Preparation for Te Araroa

Saturday, October 31, 2016, only two days left before I fly to New Zealand and start thru-hiking Te Araroa, my 1864-mile-long adventure. Right now, I am sitting in the living room of what used to be an old bakery now transformed into a lovely vacation house in...

Birth of a Life-Long Project

Wednesday, June 15, 2016, 4 months have passed since I decided to jump into the unknown and told my colleagues that I was going to quit. Despite the initial surprise caused by this unexpected announcement, both my personal and professional environment reacted well and...

Jump into the Unknown

Monday, February 15, 2016, the day has finally come. My heart is beating furiously in my chest. I played this scene in my head so many times: I can see myself stepping into my boss’ office, H., and sit quietly on the chair placed in front of her desk, which benefits...

Gear

A 1864-mile thru-hike requires a specific set of gear, which has to meet three fundamental criteria: it has to be robust, lightweight and comfortable! Discover here the gear I brought during my adventure.

Before starting a 1864-mile thru-hike during which I will experience all sorts of terrain, from costs and mountains to tropical forests, rivers, grassy valley and volcanos, I had to invest in quality long-distance hiking gear to support me in my adventure. With “quality”, I mean that this gear has to meet three essential criteria: it has to be robust, lightweight and comfortable.

Robust: It has to be robust enough to withstand any type of rough weather over the whole distance, exception made of snow, as I will be hiking during summer.

Lightweight: Needless to say that for such an adventure, the lighter the gear, the easier the hike! When I started researching long-distance hiking gear, I discovered the fabulous world of light and ultra-light hiking. They can be defined as follows: “a style of hiking that emphasizes carrying the lightest and simplest gear safely possible for a given trip”. I set the goal for myself to enter the lightweight category, with a base pack weight of maximum 26 pounds, knowing that I will bring some “heavy” IT equipment, which I will need to update my website.

Comfortable: Lightweight hiking using minimalist gear does not been that I have to forget about comfort. On the contrary, hiking 1864 miles is a tough exercise that will put my body and mind to the test. Therefore, it is imperative that I feel comfortable with my gear in order to walk, sleep and eat in the best possible conditions.

This list below contains all items brought during the hike without consumables like water, food and fuel.  I might get rid of some items as I go along. Please note that I personally measured the weight of all items. Therefore, indicated weights can differ from the manufacturer information. All other figures are those indicated by the manufacturer.

After finishing walking 1864 miles through New Zealand, I updated my list of gear by crossing the items I ended up not needing and by highlighting in red the items with which I replaced some of my gear for weight or practicality purposes.
